New England Inspiration - the other JC

Hi All,
Sorry to be MIA these last few weeks.  We took the family back East to visit our New England roots and family.  Hanover, N.H. has changed very little in the last few decades with the exception of contemporary architecture now blending with Dartmouth's traditional brick and green shuttered square buildings and a gelato shop, called Morano, able to transport one back to Italy.  And yes Starbuck will arrive this Fall. ... sigh.

Take a little journey with me and experience what summer feels like in NH.  But before we land in Boston we decide to dye my little one's hair pink to give my very proper parents a little shock.

Over the river and through the woods to Grandmother's house we go and then a stop for some coffee at Lou's and then the Dirt Cowboy Cafe for another jolt.

Dartmouth College takes it upon itself to prove very few people actually know how to play the piano by setting up 50 pianos around the Hanover area to celebrate Hopkins Center's 50th anniversary.  Here are a few we found...

And what would New England be without camp?

Surrounded by all this beauty I was inspired to work and asked my 90 year old grandmother if I could use her sewing machine.  When she said it was a 100 years old I thought she was joking, but her Singer worked beautifully and I was able to produce a few things.

Happy Summer from Take2 and send us any pictures of your kids wearing Take2 or items you are using in your home!

DARCY SHERMAN OF SASSAFRAS PHOTOGRAPHY

As you know, we at Take2 are looking to feature those in our community that ‘do it well’.  Congratulations to our first nominee, photographer Darcy Sherman of Sassafras!

Do tell, darling.  Who is Darcy Sherman?
I was born in North Carolina and moved to Evanston, IL at age 8.  I went to CU for both under grad & grad school and became a teacher.  I am bilingual in Spanish/English and I taught 6/7th grade for about 10 years in Lafayette.  I love everything outdoors, read classic literature and collect antiques.  I am married, have three amazing kids ages 13, 9 and 7, two dogs, two cats and two guinea pigs.
What’s in a name?  Why Sassafras? Sassafras is a nod to the past . . .an old fashioned flavor, which I feel I add to my photos.
How long have you been doing this? I have been taking photos forever, as my dad was a professional photographer.  I have had my own business for about a year now.
What drew you to photography? My dad inspired me to look at things differently.  I have always felt that his ‘out of the box’ creativity formed who I am as a person.
How do you choose your shoot locations? I really love to juxtapose young families with history, therefore, I choose spots that have great old junk, cars or gnarly century-year-old trees.
What is most important for good pictures? For me, a good picture is simple.  I don’t like cluttering photos with unnecessary things. You seem to have a particular affinity for photos of children.  Default or design?  I would say a little of both.  Naturally, people want their kids photographed – I walk away from a photo shoot in love with each kid and believe their beauty unparalleled to any on earth.
As an artist, what do you see behind the camera lens that the rest of us don’t? I doubt that I see anything different behind the lens.  I DO know that I have a great way of relaxing people and I know how to have fun. That is the secret, I truly believe.

Rumor has it a few children you have taken photos of have recently been signed as models with a Denver agency.  What was it about their photos in particular that drew you to submit their images? Yes – this is true.  Some moms ask me to submit their children’s photos but others I choose on my own.  My measure is more by how the child reacts to the camera rather than model looks, per se.
How do most of your clients find you?
Word of mouth is big, but website traffic is picking up!
What would be your perfect day?
My perfect day:  Family, food and friends.
What is your favorite food / recipe?
I honestly cannot answer that . . .wait, does apple pie count as a food group?
Last book you read?
Bill Bryson’s “Home”, and I LOVED it!  I recently reread “Grapes of Wrath” and “Of Mice and Men” . . . obviously I am on a Steinbeck craze.
